Mid-Afternoon Bonus: Bullets and Beer!

Although it may look like just another of London’s many watering holes, closer examination of the Magdala Pub’s exterior tells a different story. Bullet holes serve as a reminder that this was where Ruth Ellis, the last woman to be executed in Britain, murdered her lover David Blakely as he was leaving the pub on the tenth of April in 1955. Apparently in a jealous rage over Blakely’s return to a former girlfriend, she pulled a gun from her handbag and shot him several times. She was later found guilty and on the thirteenth of July 1955 she was hanged in Holloway Prison. Perhaps in a bid to escape its more macabre past, the pub is now home to The Alpine comedy club who play every last Wednesday of the month.

Sounds a strange combination, but at Cross Bones Graveyard you'll find the unconsecrated burial ground for the 'Winchester Geese' -- women who worked as prostitutes, licensed by the Bishop of Winchester. Later used for paupers, the graveyard became a frequent target for body-snatchers looking for specimens for anatomy classes at nearby Guy's Hospital. It finally closed to new bodies in 1853 and the dead rested in relative peace until the 1990s, when construction for the Jubilee Lines unearthed their remains.
