Praise for 24 Hours London

If I am ever stuck for something to do in London at 4 am then this is the book I would turn to.
-- Scott Pack, The Friday Project

As travel guides go, this one is so user friendly, I'm surprised it can't pour me a drink too.
-- Bill Lumley, The Reluctant Traveller

Catering to everyone from tourists to foodies, shopaholics and spa addicts, this dynamic guide is packed full of well-known and totally unusual things to do in London.
-- Toni Hargis, Author of Rules, Britannia; An Insider's Guide to Life in the United Kingdom (St. Martin's Press)

24 Hours London practically demands to be read. Marsha’s writing is succinct, informative and entertaining and the temptation to read ‘just one more hours worth’ is hard to resist.

Mid-Afternoon Bonus: Bullets and Beer!

Although it may look like just another of London’s many watering holes, closer examination of the Magdala Pub’s exterior tells a different story. Bullet holes serve as a reminder that this was where Ruth Ellis, the last woman to be executed in Britain, murdered her lover David Blakely as he was leaving the pub on the tenth of April in 1955. Apparently in a jealous rage over Blakely’s return to a former girlfriend, she pulled a gun from her handbag and shot him several times. She was later found guilty and on the thirteenth of July 1955 she was hanged in Holloway Prison. Perhaps in a bid to escape its more macabre past, the pub is now home to The Alpine comedy club who play every last Wednesday of the month.

Magdala Pub: 2a South Hill Park, NW3 2SBV, +44 20 7435 2503. Tube: Belsize Park or Hampstead. Open: Mon to Thurs 11 am to 11 pm, Fri Sat 11 am to 12 am, Sun 12 pm to 10:30 pm. www.the-magdala.com.

Drop by tomorrow to see our tip for 5 p.m.!

3 p.m. - Eternal Noise

OK, maybe not eternal, but a thousand years!

Drop by Trinity Buoy Wharf to hear the Longplayer, a thousand-year music composition. Played by a computer, the song that will outlast us all started playing on December 31, 1999, and it won't stop until December 2999. Fill your ears with the sound of the future.

Get a little picnic power by lunching with lawyers at one of London's most hidden locations: The Walks at Gray's Inn. Designed by Francis Bacon in 1606 and open every lunchtime to the public, The Walks are a stone's throw from the Inns of the Court (the legal centre of London).

12 p.m. - Rock Island

Head out west to Eel Pie Island (continuing with the theme of eels!), accessible via a small footbridge. Just opposite Twickenham, the island has hosted everyone from Pink Floyd to the Rolling Stones on its shores. Today, it's home to artists and musicians alike.

Fill your belly with eel and mash at Manze's, London's oldest surviving eel pie and mash shop! In the 17th and 18th centuries, eel was a cheap and nutritious dish for many -- and readily available from the Thames.

Grab a pie and let the delicious taste of bygone centuries slither down your throat.

9 a.m. - Under (or in!) the Bridge

8 a.m. - Graves for Geese

Sounds a strange combination, but at Cross Bones Graveyard you'll find the unconsecrated burial ground for the 'Winchester Geese' -- women who worked as prostitutes, licensed by the Bishop of Winchester. Later used for paupers, the graveyard became a frequent target for body-snatchers looking for specimens for anatomy classes at nearby Guy's Hospital. It finally closed to new bodies in 1853 and the dead rested in relative peace until the 1990s, when construction for the Jubilee Lines unearthed their remains.

7 a.m. - Music in the Morning

Start the day with song at Westminster Cathedral. Sit back and let the music of early morning mass wash over you at the largest Roman Catholic church in England and Wales (not to be confused with Protestant Westminster Abbey). Westminster Cathedral is thought to be the only Catholic cathedral in the world to have a daily sung mass and vespers.
